“Make Room for Peace” (The Shepherds)

“Make Room for Peace” (The Shepherds)

Prepare Him Room In the story of Jesus’ birth, we’re told that he was born in a stable because there was no room at the inn. The Bible doesn’t actually mention an innkeeper, but the poor guy gets a pretty bad wrap for someone we’re not even sure existed because of this. Yet, it didn’t end there, Jesus often found that people didn’t have room for Him. The Jewish leaders didn’t have room for Jesus, neither did King Herod or the Romans, they all saw Him as a threat or problem. Most of the people didn’t have room for Jesus either because He wasn’t what they expected or wanted Him to be. Today many people still don’t have room for Jesus because inviting him into their lives and hearts would mean real change. Yet despite all of our reservations, the great Christmas carol Joy to the World proclaims, “Let every heart prepare Him room.” So can we make room? Are we too busy? Too afraid? Too proud? Are we closed to Jesus or can we make room for Him and all He wants to bring to and do in us? An angel appeared to the shepherds with the news that Jesus the Messiah had been born who would bring with Him the gift of peace. Can we make room for Him and the peace He brings?

The story of Mary Jo Smith is an extreme example, but the truth is, the holidays often aren’t the peaceful times we wish they would be. One big reason we often point to is all the stress and business of the season.

[1] https://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2016/12/06/drunk-woman-damages-exboyfriend-yard/
This year, because of the pandemic, we’re not going to have a lot of that stress and business this year, are we? Yet, I don’t think that we are feeling any more peaceful because of it. And the reason, I think, is that true peace is something much deeper than all of that.
This series is about seeking to make room in our lives and hearts for Jesus and the incredible gifts he brings. We began last week with the gift of hope, we continue this morning with the gift of peace!

Luke 1:26-38

We tend to romanticize this scene quite. But that picture doesn’t really match reality.
The life of these shepherds wasn’t very peaceful and we can relate! Our lives are very different than theirs, of course, but just like them, we’re seeking to find peace in a world that’s often very unpeaceful.
In vs. 10-11, the angel proclaims that the Messiah has been born.
Anyone reading this at the time would’ve realized that the angle is contrasting Jesus with another king, Caesar Augustus the Roman Emperor.
The angel then says in v. 10, that Jesus, instead of being a cruel dictator whose out for himself like Cesar Augustus, “will be for all the people.” And what better way to illustrate that amazing fact, that Jesus is for everyone than by announcing his birth, first of all, to some lowly nobody shepherds!
The thing Caesar Augustus was most known for was bringing about a world-wide peace call the Pax Romana.[1] The bitter irony was, however, that the Pax Romana didn’t represent true peace. Rome wasn’t at war only because they’d conquered everyone, so to most people in the Roman Empire, like the Jews, the Pax Romana wasn’t peaceful at all.

[1] Keener, 194
And the peace that Jesus brings is true peace, not the fake peace of Caesar.
So, on whom does God’s favor rest? It rests on those who put their faith in him! You see, Jesus can bring peace to the hearts of those who put their trust in him, no matter what’s going on around us. So, the promise isn’t a peaceful world or a peaceful life, but of peace in our hearts if we trust Jesus.
We need to realize that the truth deep and abiding peace our hearts long for doesn’t come from us, or from the president or the government or the market or technology - it comes from Jesus!
And we need to remember that the Jewish concept of peace grows from the Hebrew word for peace, “shalom” which means not just the absence of conflict, but a deeper sense of, wholeness, health, and prosperity. This is the gift Jesus wants to give to us right here in the midst of this peaceful world.
And the place where that peace from Jesus really begins in us is with our relationship with God. The true deep and abiding peace that Jesus can bring to our hearts begins with this, with knowing and experiencing peace with God!

Romans 5:1-2

How do we make room in our hearts for Jesus and the peace he can bring?

1) As I said before, it begins by putting our faith in Jesus.
2) We also need to seek to live the way Jesus called us to.
3) We need to seek to live in peace with others and to be reconciled whenever relationships are strained or broken.
4) We need to give over to Jesus in prayer all of those things that worry, stress, and concern us and take up space in our heads and hearts.
We have a good shepherd, Jesus, may we make room for him and the gift of peace he brings!

If there's one thing that 2020 has taught me, it's how to be flexible when plans need to change. Due to the surge of Covid cases happening in Ventura County, and in order for us to be a good witness to our community, the Women's Ministries Committee made the (let's be real - sad and difficult) decision to move our Recipe Swap event online. This is not what we wanted or planned, but I think there is still joy to be found in gathering together via Zoom!
