Series: Die Like A King

Sermon: A Remembrance of Joy
> 1 Chronicles 23:1-5

Introduction
We’re wrapping up a short series called “Die Like a King” this morning. For the last few weeks, we’ve been looking at how King David in the Old Testament ended his life, and what he did right through that time that we can learn from. It’s worth noting that we should learn what we can from these imperfect people, but not assume that everything they did was to be modeled. Today, I want to wrap this by encouraging you to make decisions now that will cause people to remember you with joy. See if you can tell how David did that in our text.

DISCIPLE PEOPLE YOUR WHOLE LIFE
A coregency is the situation where a monarchical position (such as a king or queen, emperor, or empress, etc.), which is normally held by only a single person, is held by two or more.

See the overlap of David and Solomon? Even at the very end of his life, David is still discipling and training his son.

"If you are successful, it becomes possible for you to leave an inheritance for others. But if you desire to create a legacy, then you need to leave something in others. When you think unselfishly and invest in others, you gain the opportunity to create a legacy that will outlive you.”
- John Maxwell, Creating a Legacy

DIRECT RESOURCES FOR PROACTIVE CHANGE
The second way that David is an example for us is the way that he directed his resources to make future-focused proactive change in Israel.

The biblical picture of priests and Levites in the Historical Books is complex and multifaceted, but generally it seems to be in agreement with the (Law of Moses). However, an increased adaptation, and to a certain degree contextualization, of these priestly laws to the historical realities of a later period can be observed.

Look at what Moses told Israel nearly 400 years earlier in Deuteronomy 12:10-12. On some level, there is good news in the idea that while on the surface, it looks like David was changing Israel’s form of worship, God had planned this LONG before David came along. So, we can rejoice knowing that once again, God drew the circle of His covenant wider through Jesus’ sacrifice, and invited us Gentiles to become part of it by grace through faith.

Today’s BIG Idea
Dying like a king means that people will smile when they remember the impact you made for the Kingdom.
