Jesus is showing us how to get out of vicious cycles that ruin our relationships and our lives. His words: "but I say to you" and "do not..."
Jesus tells us we are valuable to our Father!
Jesus points us to the core decision for your life and our life together.
The path forward: Instead of worry, trust. Instead of futility, faithfulness. Matthew 7.13-14
Discussion and Application Questions for Group Life Communities and Personal Study-
Matthew 6:19-34
We encourage you to use the observe, interpret, apply method of studying the scriptures. Your own observations, questions and application will serve you the best as you dig into the text. The following questions are giving as tools for you to make your own personal discoveries and action steps. Share your thoughts with others.
Observe -
- What words or phrases help you understand Jesus' concern in this teaching?
--How is treasure on earth and treasure in heaven contrasted? What does it mean to ‘store up’ your treasures in heaven?
- Note the contrast between a healthy and unhealthy eye. Some describe the healthy eye as one that is whole and generous. The unhealthy eye is an evil eye. Where do you see evidence of evil eyes in your daily life? Generous eyes?
- How often does Jesus say 'more' or 'how much more?' What does Jesus mean when he uses the phrase ‘how much more?’
Interpret -
- Why did Jesus say that you cannot serve both God and money? Why can money and possessions become a stronghold for a follow of Jesus?
- Why do people assume that worry can improve their security? What are the benefits of worry?
- Why is it difficult to personalize God’s love for you? If God can clothe the flowers and care for the birds, what keeps you from living with God’s sufficiency?
Apply-
- How could you actually seek first the Kingdom of God (bringing a bit of heaven into the difficult places on earth) and his righteousness this week? verse 33
- What you value tells you who you are. Agree or disagree…..what are visible treasures that describe who you are? Can you surrender them to God?
- How can you show that money is not an idol to you this week?
- What will you do when worry enters your mind this week?
- Look for examples of getting what you need even if it is not what you asked for.
- Who do you know that needs to hear this message this week?
Next Session - "In the World, for the World". Matthew 5.13-16
