Zephaniah Speaks of
Trust and Hope
1 Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled, the oppressing city! 2 She listens to no voice; she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the LORD; she does not draw near to her God.

Zephaniah 3:1-2
Jeremiah 5:3

O LORD, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to repent.
The HOPE from God

The prophet Zephaniah thus gives us a view of the future which is part despair, part hope. He had no liberal vision of the human race at last perfecting itself through effort and education; human evil was too deep-seated for that. But nor was his future vision nihilistic, so filled with dark despair that there was no room for hope.
The HOPE from God

Just as there would always be evil and the inevitability of judgment, so too there would always be hope, however distant its dawning might seem to be. The source of the prophet’s despair was to be found in his understanding of human nature and human states; the source of his hope was to be found in God.

The Objects of Trust

•We are TEMPTED to place our TRUST in the promises of leaders and the possibility of change.
•We are WISE to place our TRUST in the character of God and the certainty of his promises.
Zephaniah 3:1-2

1 Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled, the oppressing city! 2 She listens to no voice; she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the LORD; she does not draw near to her God.

Zephaniah 3:3-4

3 Her officials within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves that leave nothing till the morning. 4 Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men; her priests profane what is holy; they do violence to the law.
We Trust in the Promises of Leaders

•Government Leaders (3:3) – they often work for themselves and take advantage of others.
•Judicial Leaders (3:3) – they can abandon justice for all, to pursue profit for a few.
•Religious Leaders (3:4) – they can tend to pursue financial security not sacrificial service.
We Trust in the Possibility of Change

•A change in political leadership can be fast; a change in culture takes time.
•A change from spiritual revival is only one generation away from elimination.
•JOSIAH was 8 years old when he began to reign in Judah.
•He was humble and obedient when the Word of God was read to him.
•He sought after God and enacted reforms for his nation.
•He was declared one of the best kings that Judah would have.
2 Kings 23:25

Before him [Josiah] there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses, nor did any like him arise after him.
Note in The Life Application Study Bible

“Even sweeping outward reforms are of little lasting value if there are no changed in people’s lives.”
The Objects of Trust

•We are TEMPTED to place our TRUST in the promises of leaders and the possibility of change.
•We are WISE to place our TRUST in the character of God and the certainty of his promises.
The Character of God Zephaniah 3:17

The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

The Promises of God Zephaniah 3:18-20

1-He will gather the repentant (3:18)
2-He will punish the oppressor (3:19)
3-He will save the weak (3:19)
4-He will bring us home (3:20)
5-He will restore our reputation (3:20)
6-He will restore what we have lost (3:20)
