GIVE

7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give.  And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully. 8 And God will generously provide all you need.  Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.2 Corinthians 9:7-8 (NLT)

TALK ABOUT IT

Instructions:
Talking through the message during the week helps you and your group turn what God is saying to you into action. It will help you apply what you learned on Sunday to your life this week. Begin with the key questions, add any optional Scriptures and questions if needed, and then decide on your next steps. How will you walk this out in your life this week?

Main Idea:
In this message we’ll learn what many consider to be the core teaching of Jesus and how we can totally miss the application of it for our lives.

Scriptures:
Matthew 5:1-12 (NLT) 1One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2and he began to teach them. 3“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. 4God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. 6God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. 7God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. 9God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. 10God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. 11“God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

Hebrews 12:2 (NLT) 2…Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Discussion Questions:
1. What would you say might be the worst effect of being rich in ourselves?

2. Regarding the phrase “poor in spirit” we learned that “God only fills empty hands”. How can you explain what this phrase is speaking of as it relates to the Luke 18:9-14 parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector?

3. A peacemaker is someone who values the relationship more than being right. How can this attitude help us in life? Try to name a few ways and relationships that could be enhanced.

Next Step:
After listening to this teaching, how could you now define the word “happiness” from Jesus point of view?
