Roles in the church: the people of the church (members), the deacons, and the elders.

God has given elders to the church, it is a part of His design
It is what one of the elements of His design that will make the church effective for the mission
What is the role of an elder/pastor:
- Elder: wisdom and experience
- Pastor/Shepherd: authority and leadership
- Overseer: watches over people
Elders then are pastors, shepherds, and overseers
Eldership is part of God’s design to fulfill the mission (of the church).
- Elders lead
- Elders equip
- Elders set the example
- Elders pray

Elders are UNDERSHEPHERDS of the great and perfect CHIEF SHEPHERD, Jesus

Elders protect the church from false teaching, by teaching and giving understanding of truth

Elders lead by knowing their church
Elders should know the people of the church so he can care, teach, and encourage the people of the church to grow into maturity in Christ
Elder lead by reproducing good leaders
Elders lead by training up future elders

- Blameless/above reproach
- Husband of one wife
- Self controlled
- Sensible
- Respectable/righteous, holy
- Hospitable
- Able to teach/encourage with sound teaching
- Not an excessive drinker
- Not a bully
- Gentle, not quarrelsome/not arrogant, hot tempered
- Not greedy
- Manages his home well
- Mature in faith
- Good reputation with the world, blameless
Elders should model this list, show growth, and live in repentance when sin occurs
Elders bring glory to God by calling on all people, believer and unbeliever, to worship God in every piece of life

Why is it important that an elder is DEVOTED to prayer?
