Context to Matthew 14:20
The baskets here referred to were probably the ordinary traveling baskets that the Jews took with them on a journey. Romans would make fun of the Jews because the baskets were so commonplace. The disciples would carry the baskets, not because they had needs, but because their goal was to raise donations to at least bless one young lad.
Lesson: The Lord lifts up and multiplies what’s in our hand to bless the masses. Feeding the five thousand is symbolic of the Lord’s Supper. When we sit and the Lord’s table, we bring what we have (which is nowhere near what we need) for Him to bless it. When God takes hold of our lives, He returns to us His life -- in abundance -- to sustain us as well as those we are called to reach.
