Observe –
-What captures your attention in this passage?
-How many times does Jesus use ‘you have heard it said but I say’ in verses 21-48? What does the phrase mean?
-Notice Jesus says if you are hit on the right cheek turn the other? What is the significance of the right cheek?
-What does it mean to be perfect?
Interpret -
-Why should we not resist the evil person? (Verse 39)
-Why does Jesus make a ‘big deal’ about being perfect? How is it possible?
-How does love and perfection connect in the teachings of Jesus? (see Luke 6.36)
Apply-
-If you were to apply the principles of Jesus from this passage, how would your life change this week?
-What enemies will you need to love this week? Is it difficult for you to love people who do not share your beliefs? Does it make a difference if it appears that their side is winning?
-Is perfection possible for you? From this study, what have you learned that makes this idea more realistic?
