2. What did Jesus say about the law of retribution?
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, Matthew 5:38-44
For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:14-15
Retribution:
• Taking revenge on your enemy makes you even with him.
• Never gives closure to the heart, only the satisfaction of the revenge.
Jesus teaches forgiveness.
• Forgiveness is a choice to no longer hold a sin or transgression against the offender and to not seek any form of revenge or retribution.
• Think about the “injustice of forgiveness.”
Forgiveness sets you free.
“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” Lewis Smedes
