THOUGHT: When we become a follower of Jesus there ought to be a noticeable difference in the way we live our lives. As we become more Christ-like our attitudes change, our outlook on life changes, our habits change. The way we “do” life changes.
Paul addresses five areas of conduct. Each area has three parts:

1. The negative command – or “stop this.”
2. The positive command – or “do this.”
3. And the reason why we are to – “here’s why”
Exhortation 1: (stop this) -– “Stop telling lies.”
(do this) “Let us tell all our neighbors the truth.”
(why) Because we are all part of the same body.
Exhortation 2: (stop this)“Don’t sin by letting anger control you.”

(do this) – Deal with it before the sun goes down.

(why?) – Because if you don’t it gives the enemy the opportunity for a “foothold.”
Exhortation 3: (stop this) “If you are a thief, quit stealing.

(do this) – Use your hands, your gifts, your talents.
(why?) – So you can give generously to others in need.
Exhortation 4: (stop this) “Don’t use foul or abusive language.”
In basic meaning both words relate to the process of decay or “cause to decay.” In other words – this is rotten speech or language.
Exhortation 4: (stop this) “Don’t use foul or abusive language.”
(do this) “Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will encourage."

(why) Because we are His own.
Exhortation 5: (stop this)“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior."
(do this) Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving.
(why) Because God, through Christ, has forgiven you.
