THE GREAT ONES: Chapters - #3 The Suffering Servant of God

Locations & Times

Grace Community Church

Sunday 10:00 AM

The Great Ones is our theme through November. Each month has a different sub-theme:
September = Commands
October = Chapters
November = Choices
It's hard to choose, but this month we'll look at Pastor Don's list of 4 great chapters of the Bible.
One chapter was chosen out of the 4 main divisions of the Bible:
-The Torah: Deuteronomy 5 & 6
-The Writings: Psalm 23
-The Prophets
-The New Testament
Last week we looked at Psalm 23 from the Writings."The Lord is my Shepherd."

Today our key passage is from The Prophets which is made up of 21 books. We are focusing on Isaiah 53. According to many Bible teachers, Isaiah 53 is the key chapter in all of the Old Testament.
This passage speaks in detail of the life, suffering, and death of the Messiah. He is the Suffering Servant of God.
Hundreds of times the New Testament identifies Jesus as the Messiah or the Christ. It's critical to see the comparisons between Isaiah 53 and the life of Jesus in the four Gospels.
This morning's message will be a little different as we get our teaching on Isaiah 53 from one of the greatest Bible teachers of our generation, John MacArthur. He has pastored and led Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California since 1969.
Dr. MacArthur is going to set the stage for our understanding of Isaiah 53. Pastor Don will follow up afterwards.
The discussion and application questions along with a couple of short videos about Isaiah 53 will help you build upon this teaching.

Isaiah 53 is about the Suffering Servant of God who was to come to save humanity.
We read about this in 1 Peter 3:18.
The Greek word "Christ" is a title and it means "The Anointed One," which is the Hebrew meaning for Messiah.
Isaiah 53 has been called "The Gospel of Isaiah".
You may remember in Acts 8 where Philip was led to encounter an Ethiopian official who was reading from the prophet Isaiah (53:7-8).
We read in Acts 8:35 that Philip identified the "servant" in Isaiah 53 as none other than Jesus.
As followers of Jesus, our purpose, as modeled by Philip, is to tell others about Him.
We are to be witnesses or story tellers of what God has done in our life and through the life of Jesus. In order for that to happen we must live like Jesus, grow in our faith, depend upon God’s Spirit, and be willing to re-order our life around God’s agenda.
Isaiah 53 points out the reason that Jesus the Messiah gave His life on the cross. The world is lost in sin and is selfishly rebelling against God’s authority.
-Those of us who have trusted Jesus have decision to make: Talk or Walk
-Those who are lost have a decision to make: Accept or Reject

Application and Discussion Questions:

1. In what ways were you challenged by the video sermon segment? Do you disagree with any of what was said or have questions about the content?

2. Read Isaiah 52:13-15; Isaiah 53:1-12. What portions of this scripture passage, thoughts, key words stand out to you and why?

3. Read Acts 8:26-40 and think back to this passage being called the fifth gospel by John Macarthur. Who is Isaiah’s Servant of God compared to in the Acts passage? Looking at the Acts passage, once a person is convinced that Jesus died for their sins, what practical steps should the person take?

4. John Macarthur asked the question, “How can a sinner be right with a Holy God so as to escape eternal hell and enter an eternal heaven?” Using your own words, how would you answer this question?

5. Pray and ask God for boldness to stand up and speak up for Jesus to your family, friends, and those you encounter this week.
