Psalm 42

INTRODUCTION:

Make no mistake about it — while this psalm tells the story of personal pain — it also points to the a hope that is only found in God!

The question isn’t will you face times of despair, but what will you do
(or where will you turn) when you do?

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng. 5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

6 My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. 8 By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?” 10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?” 11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
PSALMS 42:1-11 (NIV)

When life hits you hard — David says you must:

1. POUR OUT YOUR HEART TO GOD.

4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul:

C.S. Lewis said,

"We must lay before him what is in us; not what ought to be in us."

2. ACKNOWLEDGE GOD'S PRESENCE AND POWER.

In verse 8 David says,

8 By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.

When your sadness and despair tell you God has abandoned you, reject that lie and declare what is true. Remind yourself of God’s abiding presence,

3. TELL YOURSELF WHAT YOU NEED TO HEAR.

10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

There is a remedy for discouragement — and its found in God!

5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
Psalm 42:5 (NIV)

So, what do you do when you can't change your outward circumstances? You change our inner circumstances!

“’For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’”
Jeremiah 29:11

“Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”
Isaiah 40:31
