Matthew 4:23-25

Matthew 5:1-6

Jesus speaks JOY over their lives. verses 3-6 "Blessed you are..."

Joyful are those who are poor and humble before God, for there is the reign of God.

Joyful are those who are deeply saddened to the point of action, for they will be comforted.
Joyful are those whose wills are surrendered to God for they will inherit the earth.
Joyful are those who hunger and thirst for restorative justice, for they will be filled.

Matthew 7:1-3

How Life Can Be Different NOW.

Discussion and Application Questions for Group Life Communities and Personal Study-

Matthew 5:1-6; 7:1-5
We encourage you to use the observe, interpret, apply method of studying the scriptures. Your own observations, questions and application will serve you the best as you dig into the text. The following questions are giving as tools for you to make your own personal discoveries and action steps. Share your thoughts with others.

Observe -
What stands out to you about those whom Jesus says are blessed?

How is this 'good news?'

What does do it mean ‘to judge’ someone?

What do you think of Jesus’ analogy of ’speck and plank?’

Interpret -
Why did Jesus use the beatitudes/short wisdom statements as a teaching tool?

Why do many people think Christians are too judgmental? Is this criticism justified?

How could paying attention to Jesus' words in these sections change the way people tend to think about Christians?

Do you agree that the measure of judgement you use will used to measure you? Why or why not?

Apply-

You are in the crowd of those listening to Jesus. What strikes you to the heart and calls for a response from you as he listen to him?

Are there areas in your life that are flourishing? What factors are contributing to this well-being?

Do you have any ‘planks’ in your eye that need to be removed? Who in your life helps to keep you humble and honest about your attitudes and behavior?

Are you mourning? To what extent do you need the comfort of God and other Christians right now? Or, how can mourning for others, lead you to action?

Follow up-
Pray that you may put into practice the key ideas you are learning from this passage. May you be obedient as you live out your faith this week!
Check in with at least one other person from your group to see how they are practicing the words of Jesus this week.
