Title: Salt and Light
Scripture: Matthew 5:13-16
Speaker: Stan Archie
Opening point: We must master the "defining moments" in our lives.

Defining moment: Moments in our lives that are designed for us as individuals, orchestrated by God in His sovereign reign, designed to change the trajectory of our lives for the purpose of His kingdom agenda.”
Two key questions to continue to ask ourselves to be able to master defining moments:

1. Who am I in relationship to God?
2. Who am I in relationship to the world?
To fully understand the second question, four things must be in place:

1. Total surrender (Galatians 2:20)
2. We are His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10)
3. Discipline myself daily (1 Corinthians 9:12)
4. Never think I am fixed (Jeremiah 17:9)
What does Salt and Light look like?

• Creates thrist
• Preserves
• Seasons
• Light - gives comprehension to the way - adds direction
How do we become Salt and Light?

1. We must recognize that God's work in our lives is based on who we are in the world rather than what we do (Jeremiah 29:7, 11).
2. We must use our relationship to the world (our cultural privilege) to advance the kingdom agenda (Nehemiah 1).
3. We must conclude that God’s strategy for impacting our world requires us to put our identity as salt and light above any other personal identifier (Gal 3:28).

Strategy for Kansas City:

1. We must redefine our view of treasures to include resources, influence in the culture, and authority or position in the world.
2. We must leverage our natural resources and treasures (who I am in relationship to the culture) according to what is most beneficial for the Kingdom Agenda.
3. We must see being salt and light as who/what we are in the culture, rather than what we do.

CONVERSATION STARTERS – Brookside Campus
Date: June 5, 2016
Series: Guest Preacher - Stan Archie
Text: Matthew 5:13-16

TAKEAWAY: What captured your attention in this week’s sermon? What did God teach you?
SCRIPTURE. Read Matthew 5:13-16. Stan talked about how among other purposes, salt causes thirst. How could the Brookside Campus cause others to become “thirsty” for Jesus?
OBSERVATION. Stan talked about how we all have different kinds of privilege — defining it as the resources, position, influence, and authority that we all possess in some way. What privilege do you think you have? And how can use your privilege to be salt and light in the world?
APPLICATION. What is one concrete way you think God is calling you personally to be salt and light this week, and what is one way you think God is calling us as a church family to be salt and light?
QUOTE. Read the excerpt below from Stan’s sermon. What’s the first “defining moment” in your life that comes to mind?

Excerpt from Stan’s sermon: “[Defining moments] are moments in our lives that are designed for us as individuals, orchestrated by God in His sovereign reign, designed to change the trajectory of our lives for the purpose of His kingdom agenda.”
PRAY. Ask God to help remove the things in our lives that keep us from being salt and light.
