Acts 2:36-47

I. A WAITING CHURCH (Expecting God To Fulfill His Promise)

Acts 2: 1 (NIV) “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.”

John 7:37-39

Matthew 3:11

Acts 1:4-5

120 with one accord -- They were intent on:

1. Obedience to the Lord’s command to wait
2. Praising and worshipping Him
3. Receiving what the Lord wanted them to receive
II. A RECEIVING CHURCH

Acts 2: 2-4 (NIV) “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
Tongues of fire -- Representing God’s presence

Israel was led in the desert by God’s Presence: Exodus 13:21 (NIV) “By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.”
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an “Experience” -- Given Freely by God

Remember what Jesus said: “For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." (Acts 1:5 - NIV)
Other Instances:

Acts 10: 44-48 (Actual tongues)
Acts 19: 1-6 (Actual tongues)
Acts 8: 14-19 (Tongues inferred)
I Cor. 14:18 (Paul testifies that he spoke in tongues)
8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4). The speaking in tongues in this instance is the same in essence as the gift of tongues (1 Corinthians 12:4–10,28), but different in purpose and use.
III. A SPIRITUAL CHURCH – A POWERFUL CHURCH

A Soul Saving Church
Verse 47: “Praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

A Healing Church
Verse 43: “Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.”
A Maturing Church

Verse 42 “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

D. A Benevolent Church

# Verse 44 “All the believers were together and had everything in common.”
I. A Waiting Church - Filled with Expectation
II. A Receiving Church
III. A Spiritual Church - A Powerful Church
