We’d love to get you connected with us and let you know more about who we are! SERMON SERIES: Our sermon series is going through the book of 1 Timothy and is entitled, “Fixated.” Today’s message, from chapter 6, answers the question, “What Does the Bible Say About Slavery?” CONNECT: We’d love for you to connect with us online! During this time of social distancing we have added an online version of every week’s service. You can find them on our Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube page. You can also view our services on our website, hmcworship.com, by clicking on the “sermons” page. Wednesday 12:00 PM

In this passage of God’s Word, Paul writes about how Timothy is to instruct salves to treat their masters with honor and respect. This is undoubtably a very troubling passage for all of us to grapple with, and one that has been drastically misused by multiple viewpoints. By taking a look at slavery and the Bible though, we can begin to understand why God inspired Paul to write this.

1. The Bible never endorses or allows racism, slavery, or acting prejudicially
Matt. 22:36-40, 1 Tim.1:10, 5:21, James 2:1, Acts 10:34

2. God gets to the root of our problems and makes us into new creations
Eph. 6:5-9, 1 Peter 2:18-25, Titus 2:9-10, 2 Cor. 5:17

3. God is patient with us, so patiently point everyone towards Christ
Is. 55:8, 2 Cor. 3:3, Rom. 2:4, James 1:12
Reflection Questions

1. Have you ever grappled with what the Bible, specifically the New Testament, has to say about how salves and masters should interact? Have you heard any other explanations of these passages?

2. Warning, difficult question: The Bible never endorses or allows for racism or acting with prejudice. All of us deal with some type of biasedness against others, even if it’s not racially based. Examine your own heart. Who/what type of person do you have a difficult time not acting prejudicially towards? Why?

3. What practical step(s) can you take in order to treat everyone you encounter without prejudice, and instead point them towards Christ the best possible way you can?

Giving

We have added online giving to our website, hmcworship.com. Feel free to give online, or snail mail a check to the church building at 21567 Ireland Rd. South Bend, IN. 46614. You can also give during our in-person services, via the security box in the wall located in the church foyer.

Directory and Connections

If you would like to continue connecting with your church family but need people’s contact information to do that, we’d love to get that information to you! We have complied an “online-friendly,” updated version of our directory. In order to protect people’s information, we are not posting it online, though. Instead, simply contact us and we will send it to you. We can also print a paper version off if that would be easier for you. Please contact Pastor Josh for more information.

We also recently had two young men leave for the military. We’d love for you to encourage them through written letters. In order to protect their information, please contact Pastor Josh or see the in-person, paper bulletin for their addresses.

In-Person Service Update

IN-PERSON SERVICE UPDATE: We’re back to our original time of 10:45! In accordance with the guidance from our local officials, we will be holding outdoor services, so long as the weather allows. When the weather is rainy or too cold we will be holding services in the gym. We will announce, via facebook and email, no later than 8:00 am Sunday morning if we will be in the gym. In accordance with the guidance from our local officials, when we are meeting in the gym, we do ask that those 8 years old and older wear a mask until they are seated at least 6 feet away from other households. Whether we are indoors or outdoors, there will be no Sunday school, children’s ministries, or coffee bar. We ask that you bring your own lawn chair (chairs are available for those who don’t have them). No offering plates will be passed; instead we ask you to give online or via the giving box in the wall located in the church foyer. We also kindly ask you to use the restroom before you come, to ensure that our restrooms are as clean as possible for those who need to use them. Thank you for your continual faithfulness and flexibility during these times.

Small Group

If you’re looking to go deeper with what Pastor Josh preaches on Sunday mornings or just looking for some extra fellowship time with your church family, a small group will be meeting on Sundays after the service. We are also launching several other small groups in both in-person and online formats! If you are interested, please contact Pastor Josh with any questions.
