A “Weighty” Responsibility

Honoring parents is so important to God
that it made his top ten list of commandments.

Deuteronomy 5:16, NIV
Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you…

Your parents are to be honored by you!
No Exceptions Or Expiration Dates

God does NOT say, “Honor your father and mother

· Only if they are believers!

· Only if you think they’ve done a good job!

· Only one day a year!

· Only while you are young and under their roof!
Leave Them!
Adult children honor their parents by becoming independent of them.

Genesis 2:24, NIV
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife…

But don’t leave them out of your life!
Respect Them!

Adult children honor their parents by showing
humble appreciation for their longer life experience.

Leviticus 19:3 & 32, NLT
Each of you must respect your mother and father…Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God.
Listen Respectfully
Proverbs 23:22, NLT—Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.

Speak Respectfully
1 Timothy 5:1-2, NLT—Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father…Treat older women as you would your mother…

Live Respectfully
Proverbs 23:24-25, NLT—The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise. So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.
Take Care Of Them!

Adult children honor their parents
by graciously accepting a role-reversal.

1 Timothy 5:3-4 & 8, NLT
Take care ofany widow who has no one else to care for her. But if she has children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God…But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.
