"A Declaration of Identity"
Paul begins his letter as any writer in antiquity would do. He starts with his name and the name of the one with him. He identifies himself for the benefit of his readers. He also identifies his readers and offers a prayer on their behalf.
But Paul is more than an ancient writer. He is also a Christian, and more than that, a Christian theologian. So when he writes these things, he writes them not as mere civilities, but he writes them to communicate Christian truth and to teach the deepest and most significant Christian relationships. Therefore, verse 1 is key to moving forward in our study.
