“No one else holds or has held the place in the heart of the world which Jesus holds. Other gods have been as devoutly worshipped; no other man has been so devoutly loved” (John Knox, 16th century Scottish Reformer). Jesus inaugurated a revolution of subversive and scandalous love. A dead-man walks out of the grave, Mary wipes the feet of Jesus with her hair, and stinky feet get washed by Jesus: these are all intimate portraits of the Jesus Revolution which challenge his disciples to encounter him with full-hearted devotion. Do I dare meet Jesus any other way? The subversive, scandalous portrait of Jesus in the Gospel of John often complicates our lives in ways that profoundly challenges the way we view God, the world, and the life of discipleship.
