Deacons in the Church - Serve to Lead

I. We will be looking at the office of deacon.

1. Deacons are to be the lead servants in the church.

2. Our discussion of deacons will focus on their commitments (duties) and character.

II. Commitments—(Acts 6:1-7)

1. Caring for the church’s physical needs

2. Work for unity in the church body

3. Support the ministry of the Word

III. Character—(1 Timothy 3:8-13)

1. Qualities of a deacon (verses 8 and 9)

2. Evaluation of deacon candidates (verse 10)

3. Two interpretations of verse 11

4. Household management

IV. Deacons must possess commitment and character

1. Congregation must understand the roles and qualifications of a deacon

2. A church with a strong group of deacons is more effective
