Philippians 2:5-7

A. Humility is modeled by Jesus…

Philippians 2:3-11

1. Jesus modeled humility and called each of us to that virtue.

Matthew 5:5

a. Selfishness is an enemy to humility.
b. Trying to impress others is an enemy to humility.
c. Looking only to your own interests is an enemy to humility.

2. Jesus didn’t think of His position when serving.
“Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.”

3. Jesus gave up His privileges to serve.
“He gave up His divine privileges;”

4. Jesus took the position of a servant.
“He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.”

5. Jesus was obedient to His call and was completely human.
“He humbled Himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”

B. Humility is seen...

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less. A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.” - C.S. Lewis

1. Humility is seen when we give God credit.

1 Corinthians 1:28, 1 Corinthians 1:31

2. Humility is seen when we recognize that all our gifts come from God.

1 Corinthians 4:7

3. Humility is seen when we acknowledge that God is in control of all things.

James 4:15

4. Humility is seen when we forgive one another.

Colossians 3:12-13

5. Humility is seen when we serve one another.

John 13:15

6. Humility is seen when we discover true greatness.

Mark 10:43-44

C. Enemies to our humility...

“The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less.” - Tim Keller

1. Ego can keep us from humility. We think that the world must revolve around us and are full of ourselves.

2. Success can keep us from humility. We learn more from failure than success. Brokenness is often a time when we feel closest to God.

3. Forgetting our past and where we have come from can keep us from humility.

2 Peter 1:9

4. Our enemy, Satan, will seek to run us down or puff us up. Both of these aspects are hindrances to our humility. We just need to keep full reliance on God.

2 Corinthians 12:7

5. Blindness to ourselves will keep us from seeing ourselves accurately.

Romans 12:3

James 1:22-24

D. So, what is keeping you from humility?

“For the Christian, humility is absolutely indispensable. Without it there can be no self-knowledge, no repentance, no faith and no salvation.” - AW Tozer

1. Do you need to humble yourself and ask for forgiveness?
2. Do you need to admit you were wrong?
3. Do you need to submit to authority in some manner?
4. Do you need to begin serving in some manner?
5. Do you need a greater self-awareness?
6. Do you need to be more conscious of others than yourself?
7. Do you need to become less self-focused and more God-focused?

James 4:6
