I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Crucifixion was a horrific death, and the Romans had mastered it. It was gruesome and humiliating, and it would take anywhere from 6 hours-4 days for the person to die. The Romans reserved it for slaves, foreigners, disgraced soldiers, and, later, Christians. It was meant to both punish and humiliate.
He admitted his wrongdoing.
He asks for mercy.
