2. PEOPLE MATTER…Gen. 1:27
Context…This commandment concerned lying about someone in a legal proceeding (See Deut. 19:15-21), but it extends way beyond that to not giving false testimony against anyone in life.
How passionate God is about this commandment…
Proverbs 6:16-19; Proverbs 25:18
God really hates lying, and He really loves people!
God is really FOR TRUTH, and He is really FOR your NEIGHBOR!
The purpose of the truth is to be for your neighbor.
GOSSIP (conversation about another person involving details that are not confirmed as being true.)
SLANDER (making-up false statements about someone with the intention of damaging their reputation.) See Leviticus 19:16; consider Matthew 12:36)
DECEPTION (Twisting the truth…”technically” true; half-truths or partial truths all to mislead others)
SILENCE (Letting a false witness happen against your neighbor because no one is breaking silence and speaking the truth in love.)
FLATTERY (Manipulating people with words in order to use them for selfish gain. See Psalms 12:2.)
WHY?
“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Matthew 12:34b).
How can we overcome this?
Restore a sense of God’s assurance and love to your heart – the Gospel. See Romans 8:16)
THINK before you speak about someone.
Ask yourself is what I am about to say…
True?
Helpful?
Inspiring?
Necessary?
Kind?
