Esther 7:1-6

The DEMISE of Haman (7:1-10)

The REQUEST of Esther (7:1-6)

Haman attends the second banquet with the king and queen and the king again asks Esther to make her request (v1-2)

This is the third Esther is given this opportunity (5:3, 6)

Ecclesiastes 3:1, 7 - “There is a time for every event under heaven…a time to be silent and a time to speak”

Esther requests that her life and the life of her people be spared (v3-4)

Esther informs the king that her and her people have been sold to be destroyed and annihilated

If it were just a matter of her people being sold into slavery Esther would not have annoyed the king with the matter

The king, having no idea that this had anything to do with Haman, asks who was responsible for this scenario (v5)

The queen identifies Haman who is “terrified” [“dumb-founded”] (v6)

Esther 7:7-8

The REVENGE on Haman (7:7-10)

The king is so outraged he goes for a walk in his garden to consider what to do and Haman takes this opportunity to plead with Esther to intercede on his behalf (v7)

When the king returns and finds Haman fallen before the queen he assumes he is intending to harm her and calls for Haman’s immediate execution, seen by covering his face (v8)

Esther 7:9-10

In enormous irony, Haman is hanged (impaled) on the very gallows he had build for Mordecai’s execution [the fact that one of the palace staff suggested this to the king shows that they were outraged at Haman’s evil plot as well]

Esther 8:1-2

The DECREE of the King (8:1-7)

The king gives all of Haman’s estate to Esther – it was normal for the king to take as his own all of the estate of his deceased enemies (v1)

Esther tells the king about her nationality and her adoption and she brings Mordecai before him (v1)

Realizing Mordecai’s character and loyalty, Mordecai is promoted to Haman’s position and puts him in charge of Esther’s estate (v2)

Esther 8:3-8

Realizing the decree against the Jews was still in effect, Esther again goes before the king uninvited(v3-6)

The king reminds Esther of all he has done for her and Mordecai - This was not to say that she was expecting too much but to give her confidence that he would continue to take care of her (v7)

Daniel 6:8, 12, 15 - It was impossible for the king to overturn the decree that had been written in the law of the Persians (v8)

The king gives Mordecai the task of writing another decree (emphatic…you, yourself write it) that would give the Jews power to defend themselves and the king and would sign it into law

Esther 8:9-14

Mordecai sends a letter from the king throughout all the provinces stating that Jews could defend themselves and take for their own the possession of anyone they kill who was trying to harm them (v9-14)

This second decree written in the 3rd month would give the Jews nine months to prepare before the day selected by Haman (3:7)

The results were three-fold

Mordecai becomes a hero (v15)
All Jews celebrate (v16-17a)
Instead of killing Jews, people become so respectful of Jews that many convert to Judaism themselves
Final thoughts

You will face walls in your life

When you are facing a wall be assured that God is working behind the scenes even if you can’t see evidence of it

God’s timing isn’t always our timing but it’s always the best timing

Keep faithful! One day you will dance again

It is your staying faithful when you are up against a wall that God can use to bring other people to Jesus

Give Online

One way that we can participate in what God is doing is by giving. Our attitude about giving reflects what we believe about the Kingdom of God. We gladly sacrifice for the sake of the Kingdom because Jesus sacrificed for us, and all that we have is His. E-Free church is committed to sharing Jesus with those who don't know him, in our own city and around the world.  If God enables you to give, your gift will be a direct investment in changing lives for eternity.  Thank you for your generous partnership in the mission of Christ! We know it changes lives - both ours and those we reach.
