Today’s Message: Taking Your Cross
Main Idea: Jesus invites us to die to the lives we know to follow Him.
Lent
- 40 days of reflection, repentance and fasting leading to Easter,
- to remember Jesus' death and resurrection
- and let God make us more like him
Today’s Message: Taking Your Cross
Main Idea: Jesus invites us to die to the lives we know to follow Him.
Taking Your Cross
1. The Way of the Master (v.31-33)
2. Discipleship Means sacrifice (v.32-34)
3. Death Leads to Life (v.35-38)
The Way of the Master
Discipleship means to follow the Master.
The Way of the Master
Discipleship is trusting Jesus’ way even when it does not make sense.
Discipleship Means Sacrifice
To follow Jesus is no less than to die to other competing things in life.
Discipleship Means Sacrifice
This is God’s way of love.
Death Leads to Life
Unexpected reversal: Dying to competing things in order to follow Jesus leads to life.
Death Leads to Life
What is greater, your soul or your stuff?
Death Leads to Life
Don’t be ashamed of Jesus.
My Everything - Tim Hughes
God in my living
There in my breathing
God in my waking
God in my sleeping
God in my resting
There in my working
God in my thinking
God in my speaking

Be my everything
Be my everything
Be my everything
Be my everything

God in my hoping
There in my dreaming
God in my watching
God in my waiting
God in my laughing
There in my weeping
God in my hurting
God in my healing

Be my everything
Be my everything
Be my everything
Be my everything

Christ in me,
Christ in me,
Christ in me
the hope of glory
Be my everything
Christ in me,
Christ in me,
Christ in me
the hope of glory
You are everything
This Week's Memory Verse:
Mark 8:34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

Reflection: Day 1
Expand
Memorize Mark 8:34. When you think of discipleship, what comes to mind?

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 1:8–12
Additional Scriptures: Psalm 105:1–11, 37–45; Genesis 21:1–7
Reflection: Day 2
Expand
The understanding of discipleship when Jesus was alive was that disciples walked so closely behind the rabbi that the very dust from the rabbi’s sandals ended up on the disciples’ robes. How can you follow Jesus that closely today?

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11:1–3, 13–19
Additional Scriptures: Psalm 105:1–11, 37–45; Genesis 22:1–19
Reflection: Day 3
Expand
The call to follow Jesus is a call to die—to ourselves, to comfort, to well-being, and, at times, to give up our very lives. How can you live that type of discipleship in the world?

Scripture Reading: John 12:36–43
Additional Scriptures: Psalm 105:1–11, 37–45; Jeremiah 30:12–22
Reflection: Day 4
Expand
What places, and in what people, have you seen a discipleship that follows the way of the cross? In what ways has that kind of discipleship ultimately led to resurrection?

Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 2:4–10
Additional Scriptures: Psalm 19; Exodus 19:1–9a
Reflection: Day 5
Expand
How does weighing the cost of discipleship change how we follow the path of Jesus? Does it change? Does it need to change?

Scripture Reading: Acts 7:30–40
Additional Scriptures: Psalm 19; Exodus 19:9b–15
