“O beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-ey’d monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.”
-William Shakespeare
envy: a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, and success.
There isn’t anything wrong with our hardwired need for relationship, the problem comes from our addiction to comparison.
The issue with envy is always “better”. Either - I am better than you, or you are so much better than me that I have to compensate.
When we have Jesus we have all we ever need, and everything we want all at the same time.
4 Steps to Ending Envy
1. Trust what God says about you.
God didn’t make any mistake when He made you. He sees you as you are, warts and all, and loves you indescribably.
2. Ask God to sanctify (set apart) your desires.
The most common "earthly things” that cause us distraction are: Approval, Power, and Possessions.
When we desire Christ and His pleasure above all else, envy loses its power and we will find our freedom and happiness comes back in return.
3. Acknowledge the Blessings of God in your life.
4. Learn to take joy in other people’s blessings.
A mark of a true disciple is to be genuinely happy for people who get the blessing you had hoped to receive.
