Today’s Message: What is Lent?
Main Idea: Lent is the 40-day journey to Easter. It is a time of reflection, repentance, and fasting, to help us become more Christlike.
Why do Lent?
God entrusts us to use all He has given to us for His purposes.

Exodus 12:25-27

Is Lent in the Bible?
Lent ties to Israel’s 40 years in the wilderness.

Psalms 106:7, Psalms 106:14, Psalms 106:16, Psalms 106:19, Psalms 106:24

Is Lent in the Bible?
Israel needed time alone with God to become a people who would trust Him.

Deuteronomy 8:2

Is Lent in the Bible?
Lent ties to Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness.

Mark 1:9-13

Is Lent in the Bible?
Jesus also needed time alone with God to grow.

Hebrews 5:8

Is Lent in the Bible?
Jesus also needed time alone with God to be prepared to trust:
1. his physical needs
2. personal identity
3. mission (purpose in life)
to his Father, even when deeply tempted.
Is Lent in the Bible?
Jesus rejected temptation by:
1. knowing Scripture
2. through silence, solitude, and fasting this knowledge become inner-character
History of Lent
We also need this kind-of training camp to keep us from sin

Isaiah 53:5

History of Lent
Lent, which we first hear of in 325, was intended by the church to be this kind-of time.
Lent and Fasting
An important element of this practice is fasting from something in order to make space for something else.

Reflection: Day 1

Read Exodus 12:25-27, Psalm 104:9. What are things that you celebrate each year? What does the things you celebrate and how you celebrate them show what is important in your life?

Reflection: Day 2

Read Deuteronomy 8:2, Psalm 106:7-24. Why did God send Israel into the wilderness for 40 years? What did they need to learn? How did they need to change? Ask God what things you need to learn about him, and how he wants to change you.

Reflection: Day 3

Read Mark 1:9-13, Hebrews 5:8. Even Jesus, God the Son, could not shortcut needing to grow and learn. How did his time alone with the Father, and without food, strengthen instead of weaken him to say no to temptation when we often say yes? Jesus gave up food to make space to be with his Father and learn that time with the Creator is more essential than anything else.

Spend some time asking God what he would like you to fast (give up) during lent, and in order to make space to learn about Him, spend time with Him, or do what He wants.

Reflection: Day 4

Spend some time asking God what he would like you to fast (give up) during lent, and in order to make space to learn about Him, spend time with Him, or do what He wants.
