Not Done Yet Pt. 2

Not Done Yet Pt. 2

Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not command you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” These words were spoken to Joshua, but they hold meaning for us today. What has God called us to do? How are we a part of His salvation story? This sermon series through the book of Joshua examines these questions, encouraging listeners to follow God’s commands, even when it’s not easy.

Today: There are many reasons to quit anything. "I'm tired." "It's not my season." "It will never work." "I'm too inexperienced." "Not talented." or "I'm old." Do not give up or lose hope! The end is worth the fight!

Today, we will examine the life of a seasoned leader. His walk with God is undeniable and for many years Joshua has remained constant and confident in God’s promises!

Joshua realized there is still more within himself, and he was not done yet. His greatest adventure is before him.

Joshua 23:1-16

The setup for this story:
Joshua, 105 yrs old, is looking back over this journey… witnessed them moving from wandering - to warring - to worshipping in the promise land!

He’s experienced victory, and suffered defeat. Experienced bounce backs, and setbacks, help manipulators, and be stimulators for the coming generations!!!

Previously…
- Caleb teaches a rising generation by his actions and faith
- Caleb is a man of action

Today, Joshua teaches through the wisdom of his words and experiences

What Caleb and Joshua teach us about being patriarchs/matriarchs is that you have a responsibility to come alongside someone with less experience and less seasoned in their walk
Five Stages of life:
- Childhood: exploration
- Adolescence: privileges of adulthood without responsibilities
- Adulthood: Courageous Leadership looks like taking initiative for the benefit of others
- Mentor: investment
- Patriarch/matriarch: Leverage the time of their lives to inspire others in Christ for a time they will personally not see.
Joshua is living in his winter years and teaches us how to patriarch/matriarch well. Patriarchs/matriarchs...

Embrace this reality, vv, 2, 14
- He’s old, and Joshua is “Living in the shadow of death”.
- "My tank is almost empty." Joshua
- He’s embracing this reality this season of life…

Initiate meetings, v. 2
- Jacob initiates a meeting with his 12 sons
- Deuteronomy is Moses patriarchal meeting
- 1 Kings 1, King David has a bedside patriarchal meeting with Solomon
- 1 Samuel 12, Samuel calls a patriarchal meeting during a time of transition
- John 20:17, Jesus calls a patriarchal meeting post resurrection

- Biblical patriarchs/matriarchs pursue the students; they don't wait for the student to appear!

Encourage future generations, vv. 8-16
- Past reasons vv. 3-5 -- The Lord had been fighting their battles and expanding their territories!
- Present reasons vv. 6-7: Challenges the people to cling to the Lord
- Future reasons vv. 8-11: real blessings comes when we cling to the Lord!

- Clinging shows that we put our trust in the Lord…
- Clinging to the Lord is the same as loving the Lord!
- They will either cling to the lusts (of the world) or cling to the Lord
- If they chose the ways of the world, God's favor would be removed…

Talk it over:
· What is one thing that stood out to you from this week’s message?
· What is one promise of the Lord that you would like to remember day by day?
· What step could you take to protect yourself against the temptations to compromise with the world?
· Verse 8 says to “hold fast to the LORD your God.” Write down 5 things that would be a demonstration of you holding fast to the LORD your God. (Make your list personal and specific – things that would apply to your life.)
