There’s something mysterious/mystical about a letter… especially if it's a love letter. When you write a letter you put your heart in it…;
when you receive one, your heart jumps out of your chest… Did you know that most of the books of the New Testament were originally written as letters sent to people or churches?
The Apostle Paul wrote 13/14 letters, John wrote 3 letters, Peter wrote 2 letters, and you also have James and Jude…
There’s a letter in the New Testament that few realize is a letter; a letter about the future.
The logic behind letter- is love: I care about you and hopefully you care about me…, so I have to write. Love must be communicated and human beings are are wired/engineered/destined for love…
• happened (past),
• things that are happening (present)
• things that will PERHAPS happen (future).
With regard to the future we have little/no certainty. Not so with God: he knows the future! We don’t!
According to Revelation 1:1, God can reveal the future (apocalypse - unveil, uncover, pull the curtain). He can tell in advance things that must take place. When he does that, the person to whom he gives the revelation is called a prophet or a prophetess (in this case John).
The information the prophet receives and shares from God is called prophecy.
Reading is a skill that’s crucial to just about every aspect of our daily lives. Moreover, reading can take you places; it can make you part of a story… But today, I hear it often, the younger generation doesn’t read… did the older generation really read? For the most part of human history, reading was a luxury.
Do you realize how blessed you are if you can really read? If you can read a letter, you are even more blessed/happy.
Notice the singular for the reader and plural for the hearers. In those times, only few people could read. Someone who could read had to read it in front of the congregation.
When you read this letter (or the Bible in general…), through the Holy Spirit you should be able to actually hear it.
When you really read the word of God, you should actually hear God talking to you! When you really read your Bible, your Bible should read you… It’s not you reading from God; it’s God reading you…
How can I keep it if I don’t understand it? The book of Revelation was meant to be understood! I see, but why would someone write a letter with such a weird language?
John sent the letter, it passed the Roman censorship (nonsense), and both its reader and its hearers were able to understand it. Why?
Because the message was coded in a language they were familiar with: the language of the OT mingled with some current realities.
If you knew you Bible in the literary sections, you would be able to understand the symbolic sections as well. Can’t you understand the other books of the Bible? How will you, if you don’t read it? Read it! Don’t just read it; Listen to it!
Prophecy is not only foretelling, but also forth-telling.
Read your Bible! Don’t just read it; Listen to it!
