2 Corinthians 2:4

There are three great stories in scripture that involve the light chasing away the darkness and understanding these stories will lead to a celebration of the Christ of Christmas.
I. At Creation, God lit the universe with His word.

God existed in all his love and majesty and mercy before time began in the three persons of the trinity…
- But God was not content to keep His character to himself so He created the world to lavish the entirety of His character on the world.

Light penetrated the darkness and all the wonder and magnificence of who he is was illustrated and revealed in the things that He made.
While we celebrate Christmas, we should also celebrate creation.
- He revealed himself to us fully and singularly in the person and work of His son, but before that, He revealed himself to us broadly and generally in creation.

Apart from God first speaking light into the darkness at creation, mankind never would have known the hope he spoke into the world through His Living Word.

Each creature, big and small, reveals all that may be known about him.
- There would be no gospel, no love, if God had been content to remain alone.

Everything that exists, exists because of the love of God with which he created all that we see in creation.
II. At Christmas, God lit the hope of the world with His Word.

God gave mankind the free will with which to love Him.
- Mankind failed and fell from their position of grace.
- I’ll explain how, because of the fall, darkness entered the world once again.
Once again, God was alone :/

Enmity was put between God and man and between man and woman.
- This gave rise to wars and rumors of wars as the darkness prevailed on the earth.

Even in the midst of this era of darkness between the fall and the advent of Christ, the promise of God to send a savior endured.

At last the light returned… a new day dawned when the Christ Child was born.
- All of the sudden the hope of mankind had returned.
Celebrate the Light of the Living Word.

Some of the darkness in the world…
- Wars
- Rumors of wars.
- Cancer.
- Drugs
- Abortion.
- Terrorism.
- Mass shootings.

The battle rages on, but the gospel is not silenced. The light has come. The darkness will not prevail.

1 Corinthians 15:24-26 says what will happen to every enemy of God.

1 Corinthians 15:24-26

This is the end of the story…
- Not only will every rule and authority and power be destroyed… but even death itself will be destroyed.
- The one enemy that causes us the most turmoil and fear will be cast into the fire along with every authority that threatens death.
- The light will continue to stamp out the darkness until there is no more darkness… only light.

“God will be all in all.”
III. At Conversion, God lit the hearts of Men with His word.

Light penetrated the darkness at creation… the sin of mankind seemed to extinguish that light, but God in all of His mercy would not permit for His creation to be finally lost.
- With His promise he lit a light that would flicker quietly and then grow brighter for many thousands of years.

John 1:2-5

John 1:9-13

The most important event that has happened in the life of the believer is when God shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Jesus existed before time began with God.
- He was the light of the world then.
- He came into the world and was a light for the hearts of men.
- But we did not become his until he shone in our hearts.
- When He shone in our hearts, He made us to know Christ.
- When He made us to know Christ… he made us to know the glory of God.

Prior to this event the glory of God was an abstract concept.
- But now we KNOW HIM.
- Now we can be obedient to Him.
- Now we can worship Him.

God brought Joy to the world at the advent of Christ…
- He brought joy to you and me when He awakened our hearts to know Christ.
We celebrate the Hope he brought in the advent.
We celebrate the joy He wrought in the world.
We celebrate the love He ignited in us by His love for us.
We celebrate the adoration He of the wise men and as wise men we too seek Him.
We celebrate the Christ of Christmas.

The one who said let there be light, has shone in our hearts and revealed Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and savior.

For us it is not just a warm story about a sweet baby in a manger, and his sweet parents standing over and admiring Him…
- For us it is the story of how we came to know the glory of the almighty God.
- It is the story of how we are saved and how we are now able to know God as our father and be called His children.

For this reason we celebrate!
I pray that the same God who spoke light and caused the light to penetrate the darkness at creation would speak light into your heart.

How I hope that the same God who overcame the sins of the world and prevailed over the darkness at Christmas, would overcome your sins… your hard headedness and prevail over the darkness in your heart.

How I desire for Him to awaken you heart as He has awakened mine and the hearts of millions of other believers that you may be made to know the Glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

If the desire is there for you to be saved then the light is already shining….
Will you just go ahead and make this the day that you surrender?
