Our summer series is entitled JOURNEY with the FAITHFUL. We are looking at the lives of a number of men and women in the Bible. Each of them chose to leave their comfort zone to follow God and do what He wanted them to do. Each person had to GET UP and GO; they had to move from HERE to THERE.
This morning we return to the Old Testament to look at a man who was identified as both a priest and prophet.
Do you tend to pass by the Old Testament when reading your Bible? There are a number of reasons we shouldn't:
-the O.T. comprises 77% of the Bible. Covers a span of 750-850 years whereas the N.T. covers 60-65 years.
-Paul wrote 2 Timothy 3:16. Keep in mind most of the N.T. hadn't been written yet when he wrote this.
-Twice in the N.T. we are told that the O.T. is a valuable learning tool: Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11

Our text today is found in Jeremiah 1:1-10. We are talking about Jeremiah, priest and prophet. His name means, "Yahweh will exalt".
First we'll look at Jeremiah 1:1-4 to get some background on him.

Here are some noteworthy things about Jeremiah:
-Jeremiah is the longest book in the Bible by word count
-Jeremiah is one of only a couple of people who had the titles of prophet and priest
-Jeremiah served at least 5 decades to 5 kings of Judah, this was his primary audience
-Jeremiah was in his late teens to early twenties when he began to minister
-Jeremiah was called the "weeping prophet" because of the difficulties he encountered and the stubborn hardheadedness of the people
-Jeremiah saw the Southern Kingdom defeated by Babylon and then living in exile in Egypt, where it is thought that the Jewish rebels there killed him

We'll look specifically at Jeremiah 1:4-10 for today's message. Here we see Jeremiah's encounter with the bridge of decision.
He is challenged to move from his comfort zone to the faith zone, from here to there, and to cross over and allow God to accomplish His purposes in and through him.
We see a number of truths that can enable us to reach the potential that God has for our lives, our families, and our church.

2. God REVEALED a reason for Jeremiah's existence.
Jeremiah 1:5b "Before you were born I set you apart..."
Jeremiah 1:5b "Before you were born I set you apart..."
3. God APPOINTED him a purpose that was bigger than his life.
Jeremiah 1:5c "...and appointed you as my prophet to the nations."

Application and Discussion Questions:
1. How regularly do you read the O.T.? Are you comfortable with doing so, or are you hesitant? What are few of your favorite stories, characters, and chapters in the O.T.?
2. Read Jeremiah 1:1-10 and ask God to open your mind to receive new insights from this text. Now watch this video overview of the entire book so you can have the “big picture.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSK36cHbrk0 (see link below)
3. Review the main truths that were present in the message. Which of these spoke the loudest to you? Why?
4. What are two to three ways in which you will apply this message to your life? What is one point that you could share with someone else (Christian and non-Christian)?

It's almost here, but here's how you can prepare for shoebox season right now-
-Pick up school supplies. These items are very discounted right now so it's a great time to stock up.
-Scan the clearance shelf at any store to find items perfect for shoeboxes.
-Every time you go to the store, make plans to pick up a few items. This allows you to spend a little money over a long period of time instead of all at once.
-In addition to finding things for your own boxes, we encourage you to donate items to the Bridge (youth group) as they pack 40-50 boxes each year during their packing party. You can leave these items at the Welcome Kiosk at any time.
-If you have empty shoeboxes laying around we'd love to have them! Using regular shoeboxes helps cut down on the amount of OCC boxes we need to purchase. You can leave shoeboxes at the Welcome Kiosk as well.
-Maybe you aren't familiar with Operation Christmas Child or have never packed a shoebox before. We encourage you to check out the Samaritan's Purse website and especially the "What Goes in my Shoebox" link to find out what gift items you will want to purchase.
Stay tuned for more information coming next month!
