Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)
…looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
The complexity that humans have created around Christmas has obscured the simple truth of Christmas.
The only real power in Christmas is Jesus.
Matthew 1:21-2:6
“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. 1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
1) Jesus(“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”)

Jesus = God will save us.

Luke 2:11
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Jesus was born to save us from the ultimate consequence of sin.

Ephesians 1:7
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.

Jesus saves us from sin past (penalty), present (power), and future (presence).

Matthew 26:27-28
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Jesus accomplished what the Old Testament sacrifices only symbolized.

Leviticus 16:9-10
“And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord and use it as a sin offering, 10 but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.”

Forgive = to send away and dismiss

Psalm 103:12
As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
2) Immanuel(“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.”)

Immanuel = God with us

The angel is actually quoting Isaiah 7:14.

Jesus was fully human and fully God.

Jesus has always been God, but He became a man.

Old Testament = God’s presence in the tabernacle/temple

New Testament = God’s presence in a human body

Hebrews 2:17-18
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Christ sympathizes with us, aids us, and intercedes for us.
3) King(“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”)

King = He came to rule.

Herod was a false king, but Jesus was the true King.

Jesus is our King, and we should obey Him.

Acts 5:29
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.”

Question: Who is in charge of your life?

Revelation 11:15
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”

Every king in history will bow down to the King of Kings.
4) Christ(…and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.)

Christ = Messiah/God keeps His promise

Genesis 3:15
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Jesus brought us from death to life through His own life and death.

Job 19:25
“For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.”

The entire Old Testament points to the coming of Jesus Messiah.
