THREE APPROACHES TO PARENTING

AUTHORITARIAN
PERMISSIVE
BIBLICAL PARENTING

Parents are the greatest influence in their children’s lives

You’re not the only voice that your children need to hear

Parents must be Intentional about Partnering with the Church

So, who is influencing parents?

Pew Research:
74% of parents regularly use social media
- advice, resources and help
59% had gotten parenting advice from social media in the last 30 days.
Parents only qualified 50% of them as “actual” friends.

What is the greatest threat to Biblical Parenting and successfully passing the treasure of our faith to our children?
NEGLECT

Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them… Judges 2:8-12

We must give our children a Biblical corrective lens, so they can correctly process their world

It takes wisdom to have a good family, and it takes understanding to make it strong. Proverbs 24:3 NCV

1. Parenting is a redemptive relationship

When you heard about Christ and were taught … to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:21-24

God is using your children to work on you, so that He can work through you for your children
2. All behavior flows from the heart

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person Mark 7:21-23
Be On Point

…But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Josh 24 15
Be On Mission

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Love your neighbor (children) as yourself
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates Deuteronomy 6:

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1
Be Honest:

Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Psalm 51:6

For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man. 2 Corinthians 8:21
Be Aware

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6
Be real

We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts. You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness. We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority. Instead, we were gentle among you.
1 Thess 2:4-7
Be Humble

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2

All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time
1 Peter 5:5-6

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Psalm 127:1
