Baptism
Old Testament ceremonial washings
John the Baptist baptized to help prepare the way for repentance
Jesus was Baptized
Baptism is a gift that forgives and washes away sins and gives us the power of the Holy Spirit
Our Old Adam is washed away and our new life in Christ has begun
Matthew 3:15 Jesus tells John “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.”
Luther states “Christ accepted it from John for the reason that He was entering into our stead, indeed our person, that is, becoming a sinner for us, taking upon Himself the sins which He had not committed, and wiping them out and drowning them in His Holy Baptism.”
Great Commission
Go and make disciples of all nations
Baptizing them In the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit
Teaching them to obey all that I have commanded
Low I am with you to the very end of the age
I am Baptized, not I was Baptized
We are now part of God’s Family
We are assigned to Christ and therefore His Property
Part of Jesus’ history
His life, death, and resurrection
Our deserved wrath is replaced by His death on the cross
As we are now new members of Christ’s family we need to continue to be watered by God’s Word so that we continue to grow.
Deuteronomy 6:7-8
Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
God does not need our help, but our neighbor does
We are to use the gifts that we are given from the Holy Spirit to show love to God by loving others and bringing the Gospel to everyone as Jesus commands us to do
Confession and Absolution
1 John 1:8-9: “If we say we have no sin then we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgiveness our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
After realizing our sinfulness and knowing the forgiveness we receive, we then join together in the Lord’s Supper
Many names one sacrament
• Lord’s Supper
• Sacrament of the Altar
• Holy Communion
• Lord’s Table
• Eucharist (Greek word meaning thanksgiving—used when Jesus gave thanks)
Lord’s Supper
Jesus now celebrates the Passover meal with His disciples
Passover meal to celebrate the Exodus from Egypt
“Take and Eat This is My Body Given FOR YOU
“Take and Drink This is My Blood Shed FOR YOU For the Forgiveness of sins”
“Do this in Remembrance of Me”
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:26
“For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
Communion is not an individual event
Commune with those present, those around the world, as well as the saints that came before us!
We are confessing our unity in the Body of Christ
God is the ultimate giver
Giver of all that is good
Creator of all things
John 3:16 (He gave)
Gives us freely the Gift of Baptism
Brought into the Family of God
Gives us freely the Holy Spirit
You are a billionaire with the gifts that are inside of you
Gives us freely the Gift of the Lord’s Supper
United in the Confession of Christ until He returns
Are you Truly a part of God’s Family?

Are you doing your chores?
Freely you have received, freely give. Matthew 10:8
I tell you, it’s hard to stand with fists clenched around our stuff; it’s hard to keep a hoarding attitude if you linger at the cross of Jesus; at the feet of the Savior who gave His life for your eternity. The longer you stay there - the more open your hands will become.
