Everyone is a planner. We plan our careers, our finances, our vacations. What James addresses today is not the act of planning, but the attitude in planning.

My life is the best reflection of what I truly believe.
James 4:13-17 NIV

13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
It’s not about the act of planning, but the attitude in planning.
“Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” – James 4:13 NIV

“Instead, you ought to say, ‘if it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’” – James 4:15 NIV
The duration and direction of your life is determined by God.
“As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.” – James 4:16 NIV
We need to plan with an open hand.
Planning isn’t about asking God’s advice, but seeking God’s will.
“…What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” – James 4:14 NIV

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” – James 4:17 NIV

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, WHO IS YOUR LIFE, appears , then you also will appear with him in glory.” – Colossians 3:1-4 NIV
