Sermon Intro:

There is a run-up instinct to the sinful human being… Look around… and zoom up! Or some may be tempted to push someone else “up the down staircase…” Are you ready to go down the up staircase?

Sermon Section 1

1. Competence

There’s a myth according to which the more thundering someone is, the more competent he/she is, and therefore a better fit for leadership. You look at a child that has a “thundering personality…” What a born leader! Well…

There is nothing wrong in desiring to be an elder… Paul says in 1Timothy 3:1:

Trustworthy is the saying: if anyone aspires to overseership… (episkope –bishop), he desires a good (amount of) work!!!

But is competence enough for that…?

Sermon Section 2

2. Character.

Competence is what you can do; character is who you are!

The most concise definition of a spiritual character is love! Gal. 5:22-23:

We often mistake competence for character! Please note: competence is not character! It’s kinda hard for a competent person to recognize the need of character! But character is vital! If you don’t have a Christ-like character, you will use your competencies as a means of self-gratification, self-exaltation! You will run up the down staircase.

3. Call

Matthew 20:23: "You will (future) indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father."

In other words, who is going to be

elected to which office of my Kingdom depends exclusively on the will of my Father!!!
