Repentance is:

• Conviction – True repentance is energized by an inward guilt, while false repentance is energized by an outward influence.

• Rejection of sin – True repentance demonstrates repulsion for sin, false repentance seeks to justify sin.

• Responsibility of sin – True repentance accepts the consequences of sin, false repentance seeks to avoid consequences through excuse.

Changed life – True repentance is changed behavior, false repentance is repetitive apology.

You cannot resist the devil without humbling yourself.
