Responding to the King | The Great Invitation
Speaker: Tom Nelson, tomn@ChristCommunityKC.org

Who Invites Us?
"According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere flea bites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind…… it is Pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began." - C.S.Lewis, Mere Christianity
What Are We Invited To?
“You are great, O Lord and greatly to be praised: great is your power and to your wisdom their is not limit. And man who is part of your creation, wishes to praise you, man who bears about within himself his mortality, who bears about within himself testimony to his sin and testimony that you resist the proud. Yet man, this part of your creation, wishes to praise you. You arouse him to take joy in praising you,for you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” -St. Augustine, The Confessions of St. Augustine
How Will We Respond?
1) Are you living a rested or restless life?
2) Have you entered Jesus’ yoke of apprenticeship?
3) How are you learning from Jesus?
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me--watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. -Eugene Peterson, The Message-vs. 28-30
CONVERSATION STARTERS – Leawood Campus

1. Takeaway. This Sunday, what was personally convicting, encouraging, enlightening, or helpful to you? Spend time discussing this.
2. Question. What was something that was confusing, unclear, or even offensive about the sermon this Sunday?
3. Read TEXT. From the text, and the previous sections in Matthew, what are some of the factors that make Jesus’ invitation here so spectacular as well as trustworthy?
4. Whether the image of the yoke is new to you or not, how does the paradox of hard labor or slavery and rest impact your work inside and outside the home? What struggles do you find pressing into that?
5. Read the excerpt below. Discuss how you engage with the disciplines. Have you found them to increase the reality of love, acceptance and blessing that Bill talks about?

Excerpt from The Life We Long to Live: Yoke by Bill Gorman
“The disciplines aren’t about getting God to love us or bless us. He has already loved and blessed us to the nth degree in and through Jesus. Rather, the disciplines are about making the reality of the love, acceptance, and blessing that are ours in Jesus come alive in our hearts in ways that transform our approach to everything.”
6. Spend some time in prayer together. Perhaps commit to renewing a discipline this week to engage deeper with Christ’s yoke, and pray for each other to have the strength and Holy Spirit power to persevere.
