The Fundamental Attribution Error:
Cognitive bias that causes us to attribute people's behavior to their character.

Contempt comes from the Latin word “Contemptus” meaning scorn.

Social scientists define contempt as anger mixed with disgust. These two emotions form a toxic combination, like ammonia mixed with bleach.

We don’t have an anger problem in American politics. We have a contempt problem…. if you listen to how people talk to each other in political life today, you notice it is with pure contempt.

When somebody around you treats you with contempt, you never quite forget it. So if we want to solve the problem of polarization today, we have to solve the contempt problem.

- View others as objects - a threat - obstacle
- Our needs/wants are greater than others
- We consciously resist others and whatever we do is ineffective

In the box living, removes you from truly loving.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- View others as people, with dreams, hopes and wants
- Other’s needs/wants are legitimate are as ours
- People sense our intentions and respond positively

In the box living, removes me from truly loving. Outside the box living leaves the door open to truly loving.

Are you willing to FOLLOW JESUS when following Jesus creates space between you and your party, your party’s platform and your party’s candidate?

We can’t sacrifice our unity for anything or anybody!

Your political candidate will win or lose based on how Americans vote on a Tuesday in November

The church will win or lose based on how we treat each other everyday between now and then.

We must not sacrifice our unity for anything or anybody!

What divides us diminishes and what unites us surfaces.

- Are you willing to place your faith filter ahead of your political filter?
- Are you willing to place the unity of the church ahead of a candidate or a political party?
- Are you willing to FOLLOW JESUS when following Jesus creates space between you and your party, your party’s platform and your party’s candidate?

Work on looking inwardly on our prejudices towards one another and allow Jesus in that space.

As a Jesus Follower, WE DO NOT have the luxury to be racist, prejudice, divisive and have contempt amongst one another.
