Sermon Notes | April 24, 2016
Responding to the King | Fear, Loss, and Reward
Speaker: Reid Kapple, ReidK@ChristCommunityKC.org

>> Nothing to Hide
- God’s Power

“We fear people because they can expose and humiliate us...they can reject, ridicule, or despise us...they can attack, oppress, or threaten us. These three reasons have one thing in common: they see people as bigger than God, and, out of the fear that creates in us, we give other people the power and right to tell us what to feel, think, and do.”
-Ed Welch (When People are Big and God is Small)
>> Nothing to Loose

“Is there some part of your life which you are refusing to surrender...some sinful passion, or some animosity, some hope, perhaps your ambition? If so, you must not be surprised that you have not received the Holy Spirit, that prayer is difficult, or that your request for faith remains unanswered.”
-Dietrich Bonhoeffer
>> Nothing to Earn

The critical question for our generation—and for every generation—is this: If you could have heaven, with no sickness, and with all the friends you ever had on earth, and all the food you ever liked, and all the leisure activities you ever enjoyed, and all the natural beauties you ever saw, all the physical pleasures you ever tasted, and no human conflict or any natural disasters, could you be satisfied with heaven, if Christ were not there? ” -Piper
1. What am I fearing more than God?
2. What am I struggling to surrender to God?
3. Is Jesus simply my ticket or is he my reward?
CONVERSATION STARTERS
Conversation Starters are one way we at Christ Community seek to dig deeper into the current sermon and biblical text. Whether you’re using these individually, as part of a family, or Community Group, please take some time to work through the Bible passages and ask the questions provided.

Conversation Starters – Olathe Campus
Date: April 24, 2016
Series: Responding to the King
Text: Matthew 10:26-42

ICE BREAKER: When you were fifteen, what was your greatest fear?

ADDRESSING FEAR: It’s quite common to hear Christians say “I love God.” It’s less common to hear them say “I fear God”. Why do you think this is? Is it appropriate for Christians to speak about fear when describing their relationship with God?
LOOKING BACK: In last week’s sermon, Reid asked “What am I struggling to surrender to God?” How would you answer that question?
ASSESSING VALUE: Is it hard or easy for you to believe that you are valuable to God? Why?
SPEAKING UP: Do you speak openly about your faith? (Not arrogantly or defensively, but openly?)
LOOKING FORWARD: This next week, what would it look like for you to fight what you fear about following Jesus with proper, biblical fear of God?
PRAY.

Read the excerpt below.
“Is there some part of your life which you are refusing to surrender...some sinful passion, or some animosity, some hope, perhaps your ambition? If so, you must not be surprised that you have not received the Holy Spirit, that prayer is difficult, or that your request for faith remains unanswered.”
