Chestnut Ridge Church
Wise Guy - Part 1
Through God, Solomon wrote the Old Testament book of Proverbs so we could grow in understanding and wisdom, and so we would know what to do and how to respond to various situations in life. The starting point of wisdom is what Solomon calls, "the fear of the Lord."

In this verse it is the starting point without which nothing else can follow. It may be taken as the root, fundamental, or basic element upon which all wisdom is built…’To recognize the authority of the Lord is the A-B-C of wisdom.’”[1]

No single English word conveys every aspect of the word fear in this phrase. The meaning includes worshipful submission, reverential awe, and obedient respect to the covenant-keeping God of Israel…throughout Proverbs the fear of the Lord means to respect and believe the Lord.
