Genesis 3:1-16

We see in the penalties distributed by God, that sin brought pain and death into the roles of mankind.

Genesis 4:7

James 1:14-15

When good desires become ultimate desires they begin to rule over you.
Many of the choices made in the pursuit of perfection can cause shame, regret and heartbreak.
Sign of desiring perfection:

Comparison

· Women comparing women. Body image, dress, home life, carrier life. Compare marriages, children.
· Jealousy is a companion to comparison.
Sign of desiring perfection:

Competition

· Putting on a veneer for the purpose of looking like you have it all together.
· If you can’t obtain better, then devalue what the competition has. Slander and gossip is a power grab that reveals a covetous spirit.
· Place unrealistic expectations on others. Mommy wars (children), house wars (husbands), career wars (employers).
· Pursuit of self will- will do anything to win.

James 4:1-2

Sign of desiring perfection:

Control

· How can I attain perfection when my husband is not helping me? His vision is not my vision.
· When your desire is to “Keep up” you may have to take matters into your own hands. Be the master of your destiny. How can I maintain control when I’m reduced to the helper? I have to shed that role because it is restrictive.
· One way to obtain control is to insight the flesh of man through immodesty and provocative behavior. When I have the attention of men I also intimidate other women.
Sign of desiring perfection:

Contempt

· Well if men are in control let’s just let them have all responsibility
· If I don’t have any responsibility/accountability then I don’t have to account for sinful behavior.
· I don’t need a man in my life; nobody is going to have headship over me.
· Men intimidate with strength, women wound with words.

Proverbs 19:13

Proverbs 21:9

Proverbs 27:15-16

It is in no way stated in scripture that a man is to domineer nor a woman to be servile.
Let me be a Woman
Elisabeth Elliot

Submission for the Lord’s sake does not amount to servility. It does not lead to self-destruction, the stifling of gifts, personhood, intelligence and spirit. If obedience itself requires a suicide of the personality, we would have to conclude that obedience to Christ demands this.

If we have become so mature and open-minded and adaptable and liberated that the commands of Scripture directed at wives – adapt, submit, subject- lose their meaning, if the word head no longer carries any connotation of authority, and hierarchy has become to mean tyranny, we have been drowned in the flood of liberation ideology.
Sir Alexander Paterson

Make us masters of ourselves, that we may be the servants of others
