Sermon Outline:
Illustration: Cross-section of a giant sequoia tree…
In the Bible a tree is as symbol for the human being. Who knows about the cracks and scars hidden under the hard bark of a tree?
Hebrews 4:15-16:
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses (infirmities), but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
The Greek word is asthenia… which means “no strength…” “spring asthenia”
Illustration. Have you ever had a fractured arm or leg? Psychology says whatever happens to us, good or bad, leaves an emotional image deep inside our psyche.
1. Compassion
When God became one of us, He really became one of us! Christ took upon Him the infirmities of degenerate humanity. Only thus could He rescue man from the lowest depths of his degradation (Desire of Ages).
Don’t mistake infirmity for sin! Weakness is not wickedness! Jesus can sympathize with our infirmities, not with our sins!
2. Confidence
Boldness implies risk… Boldness is more about me; confidence is more about the person I go to! With boldness I can go to anyone, with confidence only to some, with full confidence, only to One, Jesus Christ, my High Priest!
3. Care
Mercy expresses the heart of God, while grace, the hand of God. Care is the provision of what is necessary for someone’s wellbeing! Providing grace!
Romans 8:26: the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses (asthenia).
