What is a good shepherd?
There is a lot that we could talk about from this passage, but if we were to try to do that it would take several hours. So, for today We will be focusing on what it means for Jesus to be a good Shepherd.
Context:
1. This is a continuation of a conversation that Jesus is having with the Pharisees that started in the previous chapter.
2. Jesus had healed a blind man, but He had don it on a sabbath.
3. The call the man a liar.
4. They tell him that he has to call Jesus a sinner or they will kick him out of the synagogue.
Why was shepherding so important to these people?
1. It was a major part of their lives
2. They had been taught that they were supposed to follow the shepherd.
What do you know about shepherding?
Most of what we know about shepherding today is far different from a first century shepherding in Israel.
1. Today we use things like helicopters and drones to keep on eye on and herd the sheep.
2. We can tag and track sheep from a computer.
3. A shepherd today has closed off pasture lands protected by some sort of fence.
So what is the difference between a good shepherd and a bad shepherd?
1. The Good Shepherd builds a relationship with the sheep.

2. The Good Shepherd has the right tools and knows how to use them.

3. The Good Shepherd has the knowledge for the job. He knows where to go and what to do.
What it comes down to is, "who do you want to entrust your life to?"
