The History of the Blood
• Old Testament blood sacrifice (lamb sacrifice)
• To fulfill Old Testament law a blood sacrifice had to be made
• Priest would conduct a sin offering to remove the stain of sin
Problem with Blood Sacrifice
• Becomes a ritual

“What makes you think I want all your sacrifices?” says the LORD. “I am sick of your burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fattened cattle. I get no pleasure from the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. When you come to worship me, who asked you to parade through my courts with all your ceremony? Stop bringing me your meaningless gifts; the incense of your offerings disgusts me! As for your celebrations of the new moon and the Sabbath and your special days for fasting— they are all sinful and false. I want no more of your pious meetings." - Isaiah 1:11-13 (NLT)
Problem with Blood Sacrifice
• Worthless without obedience to God

I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings. - Hosea 6:6 (NLT)
Problem with Blood Sacrifice
• Unable to cleanse the conscience

This is an illustration pointing to the present time. For the gifts and sacrifices that the priests offer are not able to cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them. For that old system deals only with food and drink and various cleansing ceremonies—physical regulations that were in effect only until a better system could be established. - Hebrews 9:9-10 (NLT)

The old system under the Law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared. But instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year. For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. - Hebrews 10:1-4 (NLT)
Facts About the Lambs Death
• Lamb did not resist, run away or cry out
• Lamb went willingly
• Isaiah prophesied this about Jesus and the connection to the lamb
Isaiah 53:6-8
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the LORD laid on him the sins of us all. He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers,
he did not open his mouth. Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people. (NLT)
Practice of the Sacrifice of the Lamb
• The family would bring a lamb to the priest
• The priest would ask the family “Do you love this lamb?”
• The family would physically hand the lamb to the priest
• Head of the household would lead the sacrifice
Who do you think initiate the death of Jesus?
John 3:16
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (NLT)
1 Peter 1:18-21
For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake. Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory. (NLT)
