I. Intro:

a. Matthew, whose name means “gift of Jehovah,” left his occupation of tax collecting to follow Jesus.

b. He is the author of the gospel of Matthew, which serves as one of four complementary views of the life of Jesus.

c. Of the 4 gospels, Matthew quotes the O.T. the most. This is primarily thought to be the case to reach a Jewish audience. Indeed, Matthew emphasizes many O.T. texts that predict Christ as the Messiah.

d. The central theme of Matthew can be summed up in Christ as the Messiah, the long-awaited King of the kingdom of God.

e. We open our message today from the text above from Matthew 16, which is a discussion between Christ and the Pharisees about understanding the times.
II. The pursuit of the sign is often tied to temptation.
(Matthew 16:1)
Quote:

Christ does not beg for applause.
Heinrich Heubner
III. The context of the pursuit can be complicated by evil.
(Matthew 16:2-4)
Quote:

This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent Being. [...] This Being governs all things, not as the soul of the world, but as Lord over all; and on account of his dominion he is wont to be called "Lord God,” or "Universal Ruler.” [...] The Supreme God is a Being eternal, infinite, [and] absolutely perfect.
Isaac Newton
Quote:

Outward calculations of things always end in this, that a man at last becomes slavishly dependent upon wind and weather. Most men allow themselves to be so engrossed by the signs of the visible sky as to overlook what is going on in the spiritual sky.
John Peter Lange
IV. The conclusion of the pursuit is found in the sign of Jonah
(Matthew 16:4)
Quote:

How fruitful is human wisdom in expedients for our earthly concerns, and how inexperienced and unskillful in divine things! These signs only a devout mind can read; the Spirit of God discloses the purposes of God.
Heinrich Heubner
