Question Everything Series
“We Made God or God Made Us?”
Psalm 19

Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God,and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.

Psalm 19:2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.

Psalm 19:3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.

Psalm 19: 4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

“The more I examine the universe and the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe in some sense must have known we were coming.” -Freeman Dyson

“It would be very difficult to explain why the universe should have begun in just this way, except as the act of a God who intended to create beings like us.” -Stephen Hawking - Brief History of Time

Francis Collins

Science’s domain - to explore nature
God’s domain - the spiritual world, a realm not possible to explore with the tools and language of science - must be examined with the heart, the mind, and the soul

Science - helps us understand the natural world - its tools. When properly utilized it can generate profound insights into material existence.

Science is powerless to answer questions such as:
“Why did the universe come into being?”
“What is the meaning of human existence?”
“What happens after we die?”

Science and religion share a common flaw and a common virtue
Common flaw - utopian promise with a dystopian fear of the future
Common virtue - faith
Science has faith in itself
Christianity turns to faith in God

Psalm 19:12 Who can discern his errors?Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

Psalm 19:13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;let them not have dominion over me!Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.

“We must not then, as Christians, assume an attitude of antagonism toward the truths of reason, or the truths of philosophy, or the truths of science, or the truths of history, or the truths of criticism. As children of the light, we must be careful to keep ourselves open to every ray of light. Let us then, cultivate an attitude of courage as over against the investigations of the day. None should be more zealous in them than we. None should be more quick to discern truth in every field, more hospitable to receive it, more loyal to follow it, whithersoever it leads.”

-Benjamin Warfield

Psalm 19:1
