A Twig of Hope

A Twig of Hope

Noah stood on the deck of the ark. It had rained forty days and nights. The rain has stopped by there is water everywhere. They've been looking or weeks. There's no sign of land. We've all been there...flooded by sorrow at a cemetery, stress at the office, anger at our failing bodies. And we needed what Noah needed. Just a sign of hope. We don't necessarily need to be rescued at the moment. We just need a glimmer that help is on the way. Noah received an olive twig delivered by a dove. We simply need "A Twig of Hope".

Genesis 8:11

Hope is an olive leaf, evidence of dry land after a flood. Proof to the dreamer that dreaming is worth the risk. We love the olive leaves of life. Even more, we love the doves that bring them.

John 8:7-11

John 11:21-27

Jesus brings leaves to you. Grace and life. Forgiveness of sin. The defeat of death. This is the hope he gives. This is the hope we need. Don’t think your ark is too isolated. Don’t think your flood is too wide. God is not confounded, confused, or discouraged. You can receive your hope.

What do you suppose Noah did with his olive leaf? He probably passed it around because that is what you do with hope. Paul reminds us that love hopes all things. Love says "I have hope in you" and "I have hope for you." We are called to bring encouragement to those who are struggling. Our Bibles are baskets of leaves that we can share with others.

Current Sermon Series: Cast of Characters

The people in the Bible stories were surrounded by scandals, stumbles, and surprises. Who are these people? And they were just like us. We find our stories in theirs. We find our hope where they found theirs...in the hands of an uncommon God. He passed out high callings, second chances, and amazing hope to these people. And maybe, if He found a place for them...He just might have a place for us as well. Our spring sermon series is entitled “Cast of Characters: Seeing Our Story In Theirs.”
