1. Jesus has authority…

1. Jesus has authority over illness and disease.

For reflection/discussion

For reflection/discussion: What is your definition of a miracle? Have you ever witnessed or experienced a miracle? Why do some people question miracles?

2. Jesus has authority over…

2. Jesus has authority over the powers of nature.

For reflection/discussion

For reflection/discussion: What does Jesus' sleeping through the storm tell us about him? Why does Jesus say to his disciples, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Have you ever called out to God in the midst of a stormy time? How did God respond? What does Jesus' being able to calm the storm imply about his identity?

3. Jesus has authority…

3. Jesus has authority over supernatural powers.

For reflection/discussion

For reflection/discussion: Scientific method only allows for naturalistic explanations of events, but that does not mean that the world is governed solely by natural forces or events. What evidence, if any, do you see for the existence of supernatural powers at work in the world? What evidence if any, can you identify that suggests that some people are in bondage to forces beyond their control? How does a personal relationship with God through Christ address that bondage?

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” (Matthew 9.2b)

4. Jesus has authority…

4. Jesus has authority to forgive our sin.

The Authority to Forgive Sin

For reflection/discussion

For reflection/discussion: In forgiving the paralyzed man his sin, what is Jesus implicitly claiming about who he is? What evidence do you see in the gospels or elsewhere that Jesus is a liar? That Jesus is a lunatic? That Jesus is Lord?

5. Jesus has authority…

5. Jesus has authority over life and death.

For reflection/discussion

For reflection/discussion: As Jesus continues to demonstrate his authority, power, and love in this section of Matthew's Gospel, it is clear that there is growing opposition to him. Why would people be opposed to Jesus, his teaching, and/or his actions? In what areas of your life do you resist Jesus, his teaching, or his work? Why?
