I AM ALIEN
This World Is Not My Home
I AM ALIEN
Alien Values in a Corrupt Culture 1Peter 1:13-21
Parepidēmois - exiles, sojourners, ALIENS, strangers, foreigners
* God does not call us to FIT IN with the culture, He calls us to STAND OUT
Alien Values Are Revealed In 3 Areas:
1. A Different MINDSET
• Prepare your mind for ACTION
• Think CLEARLY and accurately
* A surrendered HEART is also a surrendered MIND
2. A Different LIFESTYLE
• Don’t look BACK
ACT consistently with God’s character
SEPARATE yourself for His purpose
Kodesh: to be cut away
* The life you live should REFLECT the God you love
3. A Different MOTIVATION
FEAR—Living in an awareness that God will EVALUATE my life
GRATITUDE --Responding to the GRACE of God
*The DRIVE to be different comes from the GIFT you’ve been given
Application:
How am I preparing my mind for battle?
Get into God’s word: read, meditate, memorize and study.
Application:
What am I allowing into my mind that could be clouding my thinking?
Evaluate your media intake - get rid of anything that’s questionable.
Application:
What area of my life is He revealing to me that needs to change?
Identify one and surrender it.
Application:
What actions or thoughts are inconsistent with His character?
Confess to God and align your actions and thoughts with God’s character.
Application:
How do I respond to the precious gift of salvation?
Take time daily to put yourself in a posture of worship.
Life Group Ice Breaker:
1. If you had been asked prior to this message to name a modern day “holy person,” who would you have named? What concepts of holiness did you pick up as a kid, if any? Why do you think some people are so turned off by the idea of being holy?
Discussion Questions:
2. Regarding this sermon, is there any truth that stands out as being particularly helpful, insightful or difficult to grasp?
3. Read 1 Peter 1:13–21 for a biblical description of a holy person. What are some of the things a holy person is and does? How do these make him or her different from most people?
4. What incentives did Peter give for living a holy life? Which ones are motivating to you?
5. Peter encourages us to “prepare our minds” and think soberly. What does that look like for us today? What types of “intoxications” in our culture can cloud our thinking?
*Bonus/Varsity question: How does our thought life connect to the way we live and our motivation to be like Christ?
Application Questions & Prayer:
6. Peter points out 3 areas where we are to be different as Aliens (mindset, lifestyle, and motivation). Which of these areas is most challenging to you? Which do you feel God is calling you to be more like Him?
7. Peter 1:17 speaks of judgment. How does the concept of God judging your work affect you? Why is it important to remember our salvation experience and what it cost God?
8. Looking back at this week’s teaching and study, what steps can you take in the next few weeks to be “set apart”? Pray for each other as we all choose to be “set apart for a purpose” like our Heavenly Father.
